Reserves where outdoor training is allowed
Latrobe City Council publishes a list of the reserves where personal training and group fitness can be requested. In Traralgon they are Agnes Brereton Park, Bradman Boulevard Oval, Harold Preston Park and Kay Street Gardens. In Morwell the list is Keegan Street Reserve, Morwell Town Common and Maryvale Reserve. Groups are capped at 20 participants per session, and sessions must run between 6am and 8:30pm.
What the permit asks of a trainer
The council's local law says commercial providers of recreational activities, personal trainers among them, may not use a public reserve without a permit. To apply, a trainer supplies public liability insurance, registration with a recognised peak body, qualifications and a current first aid and CPR certificate. Permits are issued for one financial year and expire on 30 June, and applications should go in four weeks before the requested start date (Latrobe City Council). You do not need the permit yourself, but it is fair to ask whether your trainer holds one.
Brighter paths for evening sessions
After work in winter it is dark early. The council has put new lights along the paths at Agnes Brereton Reserve and the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve, ten at the first and four at the second, to make evening use safer. The Railway Reservoir Reserve covers 29.5 hectares, its walking paths are easy to moderate and wheelchair accessible, and the main car park is near the end of Hickox Street.
Between the two towns, and beyond
The council's Traralgon to Morwell Shared Path links the towns, starting at Morwell Railway Station and running past the Morwell Civic Gardens at Kernot Hall. For longer outings, the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail runs 63 kilometres between Traralgon and Stratford (Latrobe City Council). On the Morwell side, Crinigan Bushland Reserve has signed tracks suitable for most fitness levels. If getting out is hard, a trainer can come to you.
Traralgon and Morwell questions
How big can an outdoor group be on a Latrobe City reserve?
The council caps each group at 20 people. For a smaller, friendlier setting see partner and small group training.
Do you cover Churchill, Tyers and Glengarry?
Yes. Write your town on the form and we look for one trainer who works in that part of the Latrobe Valley.
