Fitness stations in the parks
The ACT Government has fitness stations in parks and open spaces around Canberra, with sit-up benches, chin-up bars and balance beams that are free to use. You will find them at places such as John Knight Memorial Park, Eddison District Park, Lake Ginninderra District Park and Haig Park. It is shared public equipment, so a trainer working with you there should leave room for everyone else.
Water and hills
The ACT Government's own list of ways to get active names Yerrabi Pond and Lake Ginninderra as popular running spots for northsiders, and Point Hut Pond and Lake Tuggeranong for people on the southside. For walkers, the same list points to Mount Ainslie, Mount Taylor and Mount Majura. Any of them can become a regular meeting point with a trainer, or a plan for the days you head out alone.
Whose land is it?
The ACT Government manages over 6,800 hectares of public urban open space, including outdoor exercise equipment and paths. Some of the best-known ground is different, though. Lake Burley Griffin, Commonwealth Park and Kings Park are national land, and the government directs enquiries about using them to the National Capital Authority. A trainer planning regular sessions by the lake should check with the authority first. Closer to home, the suburban parks and ponds managed by the ACT Government are usually the simpler choice for a weekly session, and a fitness station there gives you something to return to between visits.
