What to know about Brisbane

Council permission for park sessions

Brisbane City Council lists personal training among the commercial activities that need permission in a council park. The trainer applies at least 10 working days ahead and supplies a marked-up map or aerial photo showing the part of the park they plan to use. That paperwork is the trainer's job, but there is no harm in asking whether a regular park session has the council's approval.

Outdoor gyms across the city

The council points residents to more than 170 local parks with outdoor gyms. The equipment covers chin-ups, sit-ups and step-ups, plus interactive cardio and resistance tools. A trainer can build a session around the set nearest your home and leave you with a routine to repeat on your own, while still giving other park users a turn.

Hills for a harder outing

For something tougher, the Summit Track climbs 1.9 kilometres from J.C. Slaughter Falls up to the Mt Coot-tha Lookout. Some people like to walk it once with a trainer to learn a sensible pace, then come back on their own. In the warmer months, an early or late start makes any outdoor session more comfortable. Bring water, wear shoes with good grip and let your trainer know if you would rather stick to flatter ground at first.

Brisbane's population

At the 2021 Census the Brisbane urban area had 2,447,280 people and a median age of 36. Working from the Census age rows, we put about 14.6% at 65 and over. Whether you are training for a first fun run or keeping strong enough to lift the grandkids, the sessions can be one-on-one or shared with a friend.
