Training in Kings Park
Kings Park is looked after by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, a state body, rather than a local council. The authority says an application is required for organised groups doing activities such as personal fitness training, group cycling, yoga and movement classes. If you train with someone there, the application is theirs to make.
Approved lawns and gear that stays home
Fitness sessions are limited to approved areas: Poolgarla Parkland, Saw Avenue Lawn East, Broadwalk Vista, Fraser Avenue Lawn North (from October to April) and the Exhibition Ground (after 3pm). Bench presses, rowing machines, ropes, steppers and weight bars are not permitted, so a Kings Park session leans on lighter gear and your own body weight. Organisers must also include a first aid certificate for a nominated first aid officer and a public liability certificate with their application.
Your days off from the trainer
You do not need a booking to jog, walk or cycle in Kings Park as an individual. That makes it handy for the days between sessions, when a trainer might give you a route to follow on your own. Australia's 24-hour movement guidelines suggest adults aged 18 to 64 do moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activities for 30 minutes or more on most days, and muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week. Please see your doctor first if you have a health condition.
Perth beyond the park
The Perth urban area had 2,098,239 people at the 2021 Census and a median age of 37, and our tally of the age rows gives about 15.8% aged 65 and over. Plenty of them live a long way from Kings Park, which is why sessions at home and local parks are worth considering too.
