The foreshore as a gym
McCallum Park on Garland Street is the Town's slice of the Swan River foreshore, and it has been built for movement: a BMX pump track, revitalised basketball courts, a skate plaza and walk and cycle paths along the water. Taylor Reserve sits right beside it with exercise equipment, multipurpose courts, barbecues and a free nine-hole disc golf course, and its toilets are open from 6am to 6pm. A trainer can run a whole session here without unpacking the car, with the city skyline across the river for company.
Approval to train on Town land
Under the Town's local law, group training, fitness coaching and personal training on council land need the group fitness and personal training approval, which lasts one year and may limit the types of activity, the hours and the locations. Organised sporting activity on a reserve also goes through the Town's park booking, which asks for public liability insurance and usually confirms within 10 working days. Your trainer deals with all of that; you just turn up.
Who you will see on the paths
Victoria Park had 9,334 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 35. By our sum of the age rows, 33.9% were between 25 and 39, against 21.6% statewide, and 36.9% of households were one person. Cycling to work was twice as common as across Western Australia. Vic Park is a suburb of young renters, many of them in units, so a trainer here is used to clients without a backyard who want the river instead.
We do not train anyone ourselves. AimFit is a referral service that hands your enquiry to one local personal trainer. Tell us what you are after, or read about training outdoors first.
Victoria Park questions
Is there exercise equipment on the foreshore?
Yes. The Town lists exercise equipment among Taylor Reserve's facilities, next to McCallum Park on the river.
Does my trainer need the Town's approval to train me by the river?
For a paid session on Town land, yes. The approval runs for a year and can set the hours and locations, so ask where their approval lets them work.
