Approval for the beach
The City of Stirling is clear that most activity on its beaches and coastal reserves needs its approval, and it names personal training and outdoor fitness classes in the list, alongside anything inside the Scarborough Amphitheatre. The City manages 7km of coastline from Peasholm Street Dog Beach to Watermans Bay, so the rule covers the whole strip. A trainer who runs beach sessions here will have filled in the reserves and beaches booking form.
The Esplanade's outdoor gym
Scarborough Reserve on The Esplanade has fitness equipment, a pedestrian path network, picnic shelters and the whale playground, and the City announced in November 2025 that it would upgrade the outdoor exercise equipment at the northern end of the beach reserve. The suburb has 22 hectares of public open space in all, but the foreshore is where most training happens, for the view as much as the gear.
A heated pool by the sand
The Stirling Leisure pool at 171 The Esplanade has an outdoor 50m pool with eight lanes, heated to 27 degrees all year, plus a warmer leisure pool and outdoor group fitness classes such as yoga and HIIT. Winter weekday hours start at 5.30am and summer at 5am. Swimming is a kind option on the days a trainer gives your legs a rest.
Who lives here
The 2021 Census counted 17,605 people in Scarborough, with a median age of 36. 13.2% were aged 30 to 34, well above the state's 7.4%, and a third of households (34.4%) were one person. It is a suburb of people who moved here for the beach, and training on it is part of the appeal. Read about outdoor training and what to ask a trainer first.
