Booking a park
The City of Canning asks trainers to book its parks and reserves for personal training and group fitness, and it allows only one training session per park or reserve per day unless it agrees otherwise. Trainers also show a current senior first aid certificate, public liability insurance and their fitness qualifications. One session a day per park means the slot you want may already be taken, so be flexible on the park if you are fixed on the time.
The Leisureplex
Council-run Cannington Leisureplex sits on the corner of Wharf and Sevenoaks Streets with gyms and group fitness classes, open 5.30am to 8.30pm on weekdays and 7am to 6pm on weekends. Some trainers work out of centres like this, which suits anyone who wants equipment without buying it, and others meet you in the park across the road.
Along the Canning River
Canning River Regional Park runs for six kilometres along both banks of the river, with free entry, the Kent Street Weir to walk across and trails from the 1.5 kilometre Banksia Hill Loop to the 6 kilometre Woodloes Walk Trail. Dogs stay on a leash. A trainer can set a walk or run here for the days between sessions and check your time on it each month.
Young and from everywhere
At the 2021 Census Cannington had 6,875 residents and a median age of just 30, eight years under the state. 16.7% were aged 25 to 29, and only 31.0% were born in Australia against 62.0% across Western Australia. Trainers here are used to clients new to the city, new to the climate and sometimes new to structured exercise, so say where you are starting from.
