Running the river
The council's list of top running routes puts the 5 kilometre riverside run from QUT to New Farm among the city's favourites, with views of the Brisbane River, the City Botanic Gardens and Howard Smith Wharves on the way. Keen runners can add 4 kilometres from New Farm Park to Newstead, or finish with a one-kilometre lap of the park. A trainer who likes interval work has a measured course on the doorstep, and the Teneriffe Riverwalk continues north for anyone who wants more.
New Farm Park
New Farm Park dates from 1914, covers 15 hectares and is listed in the Queensland Heritage Register. The council lists sporting fields, tennis courts, a basketball half court and wide open lawns among its facilities, and the gates are open from 8.30am to 11pm every day. It is the obvious place for an outdoor session, which is also why it gets busy on weekend mornings.
Consent for park training
Most things people do in Brisbane parks need no approval at all, but the council's Use of Council Parks guideline names health, fitness or life skills classes such as personal training among the activities that need a park use consent. The guideline also says a consent incurs a fee only where it involves exclusive use of a booking site or certain commercial uses. If your trainer runs regular sessions in the park, they should hold that consent.
Who lives here
At the 2021 Census New Farm had 12,197 residents and a median age of 39. Living alone is common: 42.5% of households had one person, against 24.7% statewide. Walking (9.0%) and cycling (3.2%) to work were both well above the Queensland figures, so a trainer here will meet plenty of people who already move daily and want structure added to it.
