An older, coastal community
When the ABS ran the 2021 Census, the Coffs Harbour urban area had 74,195 residents and a median age of 44. Our count of the age groups puts about 23.6% of them at 65 or older. If that includes you, a trainer can begin with balance, walking and simple strength work, then build at a speed the two of you agree on. There is a younger crowd as well: again by our count, about 21.8% of residents were aged 20 to 39.
Beach sessions under a Crown Land sub-licence
The City of Coffs Harbour has approved 17 sub-licences for low-impact commercial activities on council-managed Crown land, each for a five-year term that began on 1 July 2024. One of the approved submissions covers outdoor fitness and personal training across Crown beachfront reserves including Jetty Beach, Sawtell Beach and Woolgoolga Beach.
Because these are set arrangements with the City, it pays to ask a trainer which reserve they work from before you turn up with a towel and water bottle.
Choosing where to train
On the form, mention whether you are closer to Jetty Beach, Sawtell or Woolgoolga, or whether you would rather stay off the sand altogether. A trainer can come to your place in Korora or Boambee East instead: see mobile personal training. For what a park or beach session tends to involve, read about outdoor training.
Coffs Harbour questions
Which beaches are on the City's approved list?
The approved submission for outdoor fitness and personal training names Crown beachfront reserves including Jetty Beach, Sawtell Beach and Woolgoolga Beach. The word "including" means the list may not be complete, so check the exact spot with the trainer.
How long do the current sub-licences run?
The City's public notice gives a five-year term starting on 1 July 2024. The arrangement for the named reserves is meant to last a while, but details can change, so confirm the meeting place with the trainer each season.
What should I put on the form?
Your suburb or town, such as Moonee Beach or Toormina, the kind of training you want and the times that suit you. The request form lets you skip anything you are unsure about.
