Permits by season
The City of Parramatta asks fitness professionals who run group fitness or personal training in its parks, reserves, sport fields or courts to hold a permit, issued by season for activities including aerobics, resistance training with or without equipment, boxing and kick boxing, yoga, tai chi and circuit training. The permit runs for a winter season from March to September or a summer season from September to March, and the trainer holds a senior first aid certificate with CPR and public liability insurance that names the council as an interested party.
Parramatta Park is not the council's
The big green space on the city's edge, Parramatta Park, is 85 hectares of lawns and gardens and one of Australia's eleven World Heritage-listed convict sites. It is run by Greater Sydney Parklands, a NSW Government agency, which welcomes personal trainers who hold its own permit, a senior first aid certificate and public liability insurance. A council permit does not cover it, so a trainer who works both needs both.
The loop and Long Avenue
Inside the park, a 3.2-km loop cycle lane and shared paths suit riders and runners of all levels, and Long Avenue is a smooth 600-metre path beside Domain Creek that is ideal for timed efforts. The council also puts outdoor fitness equipment in many of its own parks and reserves, usually as stations grouped together or strung along an exercise path.
A young city of towers
Parramatta had 30,211 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 32. 85.6% of dwellings were flats or apartments, only 24.8% of residents were born in Australia and by our sum of the age rows just 6.6% were 65 or over. Trainers here work with people new to Australia and new to the city, often in a building gym, and they are used to explaining how things work from the start.
