Permits with park hours
Inner West Council requires every commercial fitness trainer, and every large running club, to hold a permit and pay to use its parks and sporting grounds. Each approved site has its own hours: Camperdown Memorial Rest Park and Enmore Park run from 6.30am to 9pm, while sporting grounds such as Camperdown Park open at 5.30am and close to trainers at 4pm so clubs can have the evening. If your trainer proposes a 6am session, the sporting ground is the one that fits.
Two trainers per park
The council's commercial fitness trainers policy allocates permits to a maximum of two trainers per designated park or sporting ground at any one time, issues them for up to one year and expects a first aid certificate, CPR, public liability and professional indemnity insurance. The policy allows gym sessions with or without weights, boxing with pads and restricted boot camps. Two trainers per park keeps the grass free for everyone else, and it means a popular park may be full.
Camperdown Memorial Rest Park
Camperdown Memorial Rest Park between Federation Road, Lennox Street and Church Street is a large grassed area with historic features that became a public park in 1948. It has a fenced playground, drinking fountains, toilets and off-leash dog times, and it is the Newtown green space most trainers use. Enmore Park, a short walk south, adds the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre.
Who lives in Newtown
Newtown had 14,690 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 34. By our sum of the age rows, 38.8% were aged 20 to 34, nearly double the state share, and 36.5% of households were a single person. Walking and cycling to work were both well above New South Wales as a whole. Many people here want a trainer for strength and structure rather than a lift to the park, and say so.
