A permit with no fee
The City of Stonnington requires a permit for personal training in its parks and reserves, and charges nothing for it. Permits run by season, summer from 1 October and winter from 1 April, and the trainer supplies public liability insurance, a site-specific risk management plan and evidence of registration with a recognised peak body. The council's terms keep sessions between 6am and 9pm, generally cap groups at 15, allow no amplification and bar weight equipment over 10kg on sports grounds. Dog-walking favourites such as Argo Reserve are off limits to trainers altogether.
Como Park
Como Park on William Road slopes down to the Yarra beside the historic Como House, and it has outdoor exercise equipment, a basketball half court, a bike path and a floodlit oval. Prahran Council bought the land in 1921 and opened the park in 1934. Dogs run off-leash at Thomas Oval in the southern end, so trainers tend to use the northern lawns.
The river walk
The council's Como Park and River Walk is a 4.9 km loop that follows a bend of the Yarra along bushy paths, circles the Grange Road wetlands and returns through Como Park North and South. Stonnington rates it easy and good for any fitness level, which makes it a sensible first assignment from a trainer before the sessions get harder.
Apartment living
South Yarra had 25,028 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 33. Nearly half of households (49.3%) were one person, 79.5% of dwellings were flats and 18.0% of residents were aged 25 to 29. A building gym or a nearby park is the usual venue, and training at home works even in a small flat if you tell the trainer what room you have.

South Yarra questions
Does the Stonnington permit cost the trainer anything?
No. The council says there is no fee for a personal training permit.
Can a trainer bring heavy weights to Como Park?
Not onto the sports ground. Stonnington's terms bar weight equipment over 10kg there, so expect lighter gear and body weight work.
