Seven parks, one of them here
Maribyrnong City Council allows personal training in just seven parks: Braybrook Park, Coulson Gardens, Cruickshank Park, Footscray Park, McIvor Reserve, Robert Barrett Reserve and Yarraville Gardens. Even there, sessions stay out of high pedestrian areas, places of cultural or environmental significance and the playground and barbecue zones. Permits run for six-month seasons, summer from 1 October and winter from 1 April, and the participant categories do not count the trainer. The trainer carries public liability insurance that names the council.
Footscray Park
Footscray Park on Ballarat Road is a regional open space that the council describes as the most intact Edwardian period public garden in Victoria, with views to the city skyline and Flemington Racecourse. For training it offers a fitness circuit, walking paths and connections to the Maribyrnong River Trail. Dogs stay on-lead within five metres of the river trail, and the council's own page reminds trainers they need a permit to work here.
No booking, but a permit
Under the council's casual park bookings rules, personal trainers do not book a park the way an event does, but they must hold the permit. Ask your trainer which season their permit covers; a session that starts in late March may straddle the change.
A suburb in its thirties
The 2021 Census counted 17,131 people in Footscray, with a median age of 34. 15.4% were aged 30 to 34, double the Victorian share, just over half were born in Australia and 52.3% of dwellings were flats. Trainers here meet new residents from everywhere, many of them in apartments near the station, which is why partner training with a flatmate is a common ask.
