The trail through the suburb
The Merri Creek Trail runs 21 km from Dights Falls, where the creek meets the Yarra, north to the Western Ring Road Trail, passing the Brunswick Velodrome, CERES and Coburg Lake Reserve on the way. At its southern end it joins the Yarra River Trail and the Capital City Trail. For a Brunswick trainer it is a ready-made course: flat sections for steady running, bridges and steps for something harder, and an exit back to a side street almost anywhere.
Permits for park training
On its park pages, Merri-bek City Council says plainly that anyone who wants to run a personal training or fitness activity in a park needs to apply for a permit. Its sporting facilities user guide charges trainers by the quarter, with one rate for up to two sessions a week and a higher one for three or more. That is the trainer's cost, not yours, but it tells you a regular park session here is a planned thing rather than a casual one.
Gillon Oval and the shared spaces
A G Gillon Oval is one of more than 55 shared open spaces in the municipality, with cricket nets and a small playground under a eucalypt. Local clubs use the oval at scheduled times, dogs leave the ground while organised sport is on and stay 15 metres from the playground, and trainers fit around all of that. Early mornings are usually the quiet slot.
Who trains here
Brunswick had 24,896 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 34. 6.0% of workers cycled to work, more than eight times the Victorian rate, and by our sum of the age rows only 11.2% of residents were 65 or over. Plenty of people here already ride every day and come to a trainer for strength, not cardio. Say what you want to add, not just that you want to get fit.

Brunswick questions
Can we train on the Merri Creek Trail?
The trail is a public path, and a trainer using a park beside it needs a Merri-bek permit. Ask which section they use.
Is Gillon Oval free during the week?
Clubs use it at scheduled times, so a trainer works around the bookings. Mornings are the usual choice.
